Chapter Twenty-Three

Tabitha corralled us into a black van parked down an alley three blocks from the matchbox house. The twins sat in the middle row while Seamus squeezed himself into the far back. While Tabitha drove, her eyes flickered down to my hands. Normally, I might be slightly embarrassed that my hands had grown to claws, but everyone in this car was lucky that they were still alive after the circus they just put me through.

“Care to explain why you asked if I was going to murder my own soulmate?” I glared ahead at the dark road. The radio droned on in the background about some baseball game.

Tabitha wiped the glistening sweat from her forehead with the back of her freckled hand and flicked on the air conditioner. “I apologize for the dramatics at the house. We weren’t sure what your intentions were,” began Tabitha. “The rogues’ threat has been increasing. They have always been a thorn in the pack’s side but their threat had been manageable until recently. On their own, apart from the High Shifter Counsel, they have bound together to create their own set of packs, hierarchy, and laws. Their numbers–which last we heard were several thousand– are growing by the day.”

Tabitha turned onto the main road back to the part of the Grand Canyon I had been searching. “To prove their loyalty to the Fallen One and be accepted into their new packs, they are required to reject the most sacred bond of the Creator. They must find and kill their soulmates in order to ensure the rebellion—or the Second Succession as they call it—is the most important aspect of their lives.” Tabitha glanced at me and then back at the road. “When we found out Seamus was coming, we weren’t sure where your loyalties lay and had to test if you were working with the rogues by seeing if you were genuine in searching for your soulmate or if you were seeking her out to kill her so that you could join the Second Succession.”

Her words snapped my attention back to her. “What I am planning to do to the man who is holding my mate would cause a medieval torturer to throw up. Does that explain my loyalty to her?”

The side of her pale lips twitched up. “Perfectly.”

“Why did you question my loyalty?” Seamus asked from the far back.

Maverick settled back in his seat, picking up a book that had fallen to the ground by his feet. “You have become infamous in the hacker world after what you did.” He opened the book but his eyes didn’t move to read. He was watching us out of the corner of his eye. A rouse of calm while waiting for an attack. Out of the twins, Maverick was the most dangerous. Far more observant than most alphas.

“Dr. Drius is number one on the rogues’ most wanted list,” Tabitha said, slowing the van to take a narrow curve. “No one except the doctor knows why they want him so badly.
